Exactly 10 years ago, many in Shanghai went out to demonstrate against Maglev Train Projects, in worry of possible impact on health by magnetic field. "Reject Maglev. Protect Family!" they cried out repeatedly loud and clear and returned home in peace before mid night. Shanghai citizens have always been a clever group. They chose exactly the best approach, wording and location to get listened! After that, the development team might get only very limited funding/personnel and no local government wish to make the lead not until 2014, 7 years from the incidence.
I have seen more than 10 demonstrations in person in Mainland China, during my business trips there. As I know, as long as no violence be provoked, officials will meet and listen to representatives and always ready to offer rational compromise. One thing to remember : Make the call directly and loudly on the issues even against responsible officials in name, but not anything related to over turning the ruling party or the party chairman. Also, not to block the traffic.
In early 80s, I had similar concern on magnetic fields associated with transmission lines, as I became a father. But almost no study report with authority could be located at that time.
Research on Super-maglev (600 km/h plus) and Mid-Low Speed Maglev (low cost 100km/h) picked up again about 3 years ago, as the general public recede from magnetic field worries and had been better informed.
The first 600 km/h prototype would be ready by 2020.
